Nelson Mandela was born Rolihlahla Mandela on the 18th of July in 1918. He was the only child of Nonqaphi Nosekeni and Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela. As a child, Nelson grew up surrounded by leadership and pride as his father was the principal counselor to the acting king of the Thembu people. Mandela was the first in his family line to attend school and a primary teacher in Qunu gave him the name ‘Nelson’ as it was customary to give all school children Christian names. Upon his father's death in 1927, Nelson was put under the guardianship of the regent Jongintaba. However, due to his father’s rank being of royalty, he was able to continue his education right through to the tertiary stage.
